And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” And he knelt down and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep. And Saul was consenting to his death. (Acts 7:59-8:1) We are facing unprecedented persecution. There were more people martyred for Christ in the twentieth century than were martyred during the two thousand years preceding it. However, the Name of Jesus will not be wiped out. Although St. Paul did not know it when he consented to the stoning of St. Steven, he was to be God’s chosen vessel to spread the Word among the Gentiles. Martyrdom and persecution make the Church strong. Do not fear when people mock and threaten us for speaking the Truth. Our job is not to court earthly favor, but to strive for Eternity!
