And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be your gods, O Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt (Ex. 32:4). Moses was on top of the mountain, dealing with Heavenly things, while, at the foot of the mountain, Aaron and the people sat at the feet of Satan, admiring a golden calf, and dancing and singing around it. The Devil can make men dance and sing, or writhe and scream, if either action can oppose or dishonor Christ. The calf was the great god of the Egyptians. It was carried in the vanguard of their processions. Sacrifices were offered to it, and lascivious dances executed in its honor. It was worshipped as the generator of life. People who are ignorant of the brute condition of fallen man’s heart think it incredible that men and women who passed through the Red Sea, who daily looked upon the pillar of fire, who heard the Voice of God, and who witnessed the sublime terrors of Mount Sinai, could possibly have fallen, and in so short a time, into such gross idolatry. The Apostle Paul did not share this incredulity, for he declares that these facts admonish the Church (I Cor., Chpt. 10). Moses had gone up on high, but because he delayed to return, Israel made a god they could see. So it is today. Christendom prefers a human priest and a little piece of bread that may be seen and handled to the Divine Priest Who has passed into the Heavens. One of the depths of Satan is not to abolish God, but to represent Him by something visible. Hence the feast of Exodus 32:5 was proposed as a feast to Jehovah. Also Satan can, through a religious teacher like Aaron, associate idolatry with Christ, recognize the good in all religions, and provide a worship that appeals to man’s natural heart. In fact, everything, as it regards the golden calf, was done by Aaron under the cover of “religion.” As someone has well said, “The doing of religion is the most powerful narcotic in the world.” Anything and everything that departs from Christ and the Cross must be constituted as mere religion.
