The only thing the future Newcastle CBD light rail (not guaranteed to occur) has in common with Sydneys City Circle, is the probable gauge of its tracks... ---------------------------------- Rail critics wrong Patrick McMahon (Letters, December 2) has used the same false terminology as many others opposing the Newcastle rail changes. The government is not tearing up a rail link to a major regional centre, it is merely relocating Newcastle station a short distance. The two-kilometre distance is less than Central to the Quay. The benefits will include removing the physical and visual barrier that blights the centre of the city, blocking access to the river. It is similar in intent to what Perth is doing to link the city and the river by burying a major road. The proposed light rail system will be similar to Sydneys city circle line and provide effective links to a bigger area than served by the current station. Just get on with the project, please.
