And now a little something mouthwatering from Auvillar: Even though Im a writer, its tough to isolate and describe just how my stay at la Moulin à Nef influenced my work, a humbling observation. The place seeps first into muscle, then bone as your body registers the first-day hike to town -- les halles, la boulangerie, le café. A day, maybe two, later, youre a townie: eager for cocks crow, church bells, sun-fire lighting the river. You work, but stop for wine at lunch; you use college French with townspeople, who are patient and happy to hear it; you dance at the winemakers dinner, help harvest the grapes. At dinnertime with a fellow or two or three, one stir-fries, one slices bread and cheese, another pours wine. Words fly: hows the work? what do you think of...? how do you handle...? Shared intimacies about art-making fall in a luxurious flow, among writers and artists who, though I couldnt know it then, shook my work. My days in Auvilllar tapped a well.
