And now, after being replaced for ten days by my short story, ‘The Call’, I am back posting my daily reflections on the ongoing intriguing mess that is life. On which note... around ten days ago I was on the Greek island of Kastellorizo: a wondrous, obscure, largely untouristed corner of the eastern Aegean, just two kilometers from Turkey; an island with craggy stone peaks (which I climbed on two exhausting/exhilarating occasions), a stunning harbor, and a villagescape of traditional dwellings, all painted in the azure and pastel blues (contracted with brilliant white) that so define the Greek aesthetic. I was staying in a splendid pension fronting the harbor. Three steps from my ground-floor room and I could dive into the clear waters of the Aegean. And on my penultimate day there, while swimming around a kilometer or so from shore, I was passed by in a small motor boat, in which sat a French couple, wildly arguing. “You always do this!” she shouted, “I do this? I do this? he shouted back. “You - who must criticize me at every moment of the day!” And then the boat buzzed out of my ear range. I was left there, floating in the water, the echo of their anger still ricocheting around my head, staring up at the sweep of Kastellorizo while engulfed in the aquamarine wonder of the Aegean. And thinking to myself: Therein is the human comedy writ large. The pettiness of conjugal anger amidst epic grandeur. We really do so frequently sully the sublime.
