And now to the absolute highlight of the day (well, Steelers warming up now, so although 1:00am in the UK now, it’s practically lunchtime for me…) the Chelsea – Manchester City Match. Manchester City showed amazing quality of football to begin with, with 58% ball possession, 16 shots, 4 on target, vs. 6 and 2 on target for Chelsea, 14 corners vs. 2 for Chelsea; and unfortunately City was also leading in penalties – with 16 vs. 12 for Chelsea. Most of these penalties were due, and consisted of good challenges by City. One outcome was Diego Costa not being able to create opportunities and being enclosed by City for most of the match, a cause of frustration that may have been reason to what happened next… The first event to note is Pablo Zabaleta’s yellow card (’31) that was awarded due to a foul on Eden Hazard. This was followed by a second yellow (’65) to Zabaleta that was rightly awarded – I’m sadden to say – for a foul on Diego Costa. Things started to get chaotic when Pablo put his hand around Costa, with what I thought was a intended to be a friendly gesture, but was followed by Costa’s aggressive reaction that then turned into a bit of a fight. Zabaleta was then sent off, changing the entire balance for City. Be it a fussy referee that is handing out too many yellow cards, or Costa’s over reaction that may have made the referee give that yellow card – Zabaleta still should have been a lot more calculated and cautious. Already having one yellow card, an international player like Pablo should have known better than putting himself into this position.
