And she (Mary) gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn (Luke 2:7, NIV). For us, the birth of Christ is the climax of the Christmas story. But it was not so for Mary and Joseph. The prophecies had been fulfilled and the angels had announced the birth of the Son of God. But there were many things yet to come...the arrival of the shepherds and later of the three kings from the East. And, yes, there was the routine of raising a child. The day to day activities that all parents engage in as they raise their children. It was time for Mary and Joseph to settle into the routine of parenting. The Christian life is often like this. We come by faith into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. We might feel that this is the climax of our new life in Christ. And, yet though it is the climax to a life separated from God, it is actually the beginning of new life in Christ. Before us lies a long journey of following Christ. There will be times of prophesies, angels and shepherds, and wise men in our lives, but the test of our faith comes in the routine events of life. We can do most anything for a brief time, but the reality of our faith is born out of our daily living. This is why it is necessary that we surrender our lives daily to Christ. It is through this daily offering of ourselves to Him that His will is accomplished through our lives. And then to our wonder we discover that though we expect Him in the big events of our lives, He is most often present in the routine details of our lives. Carmina Gadelica, An Anthology of Ancient Celtic Prayers contains the following prayer... God with me lying down, God with me rising up, God with me in each ray of light.. Christ with me sleeping, Christ with me waking, Christ with me watching, Every day and night... God with me protecting, The Lord with me directing, The Spirit with me strengthening, For ever and for evermore, Amen... Lets not miss Him this Christmas by overlooking the routine of our lives. God bless you.
