And speaking of little guys who hit it big in the 70s, what about Paul Williams? During this time he wrote hits for Barbara Streisand, The Carpenters and 3 Dog Night to name a few. He composed songs for The Muppet Movie, Bugsy Malone and Phantom of the Paradise, not to mention the Boy in the Plastic Bubble. And he still had time to act in such films as Smokey and the Bandit, Battle for the Planet of the Apes and many TV shows. The 70s would not be complete without him.
