And the second in my series of WWI tributes, Germany, featuring a German trooper fitted with early war gear, including the iconic pickelhaube, or spiked helmet. Made of cork, it wasnt the best for protection, and was replaced with a steel helmet by 1916. Hes being urged on in spirit by other historical German warriors: a 19th century Prussian hussar, a 16th century landsknecht mercenary, and a Roman-era Germanic warrior. The words (top) translate to God with us, (bottom left) Now, man! Only courage for the Fatherland!, and (bottom right) Fight, sons of Arminius! (Arminius being the legendary Germanic warrior who defeated the Romans.) Also, apologies to any German-speakers if I got the grammar wrong!
