And there we were shuffling around Hamleys toy store yesterday with Ellie. The place was heaving, as youd imagine, but not over the top. As Ellie browsed I maintained a slow but steady pace. After a few minutes I noticed a family right behind me. So I thought Id stop and let them go by me. As I stopped they stopped too. They seemed interested in the shelves near them so I continued. A few short moments later I saw this family behind me again. The man was short and non-descript look about him. She was a huge lady. She could have given a good account of herself in the England Rugby team. As did their two massive offspring. The boys were young in the face but it was easy to see they were fond of the delights of the dinner table (yes yes, I know, takes one to know one) Anyway, there they were behind me again. So once again I stopped to allow them to pass. Once again they stopped. So I did the sweep of the arm thing to let them know they could go ahead of me. The mans face gestured that they didnt need to at that moment. So I changed direction. Moments later there they were. So I smiled and looked around for the hidden camera. Nothing. So I stopped again, pretending interest in a Hello Kitty pencil set. They waited. I moved a little and stared at a Hello Kitty soft toy. They moved a little and waited. I moved with sudden speed to a Hamleys toy demonstration. They caught up and watched. Then Ellie stopped at a section that had animal figures she likes to collect. So I went over to her and looked with her. They actually followed. Enough was enough. So after what seemed an age but was probably just a minute I asked them if I could help. Er, no thanks, said the man, Were just looking. Then I wondered if they thought I worked there. The man shrugged as if to wonder why this buffoon gave up this information. So I said, its just that you appear to be following me. Well I suppose we were really. .....its just that you seemed to know where you were going. Sorry? I spluttered. Well we arent from around here and we cant find the exit. So you thought I was on my way out and youd follow me? Well, yes. We were three floors up. There is the escalator, keep going down until you get to the ground floor and then then turn right and immediately right again and walk straight ahead. You will see the door in front of you, well your wife and kids will. (I didnt say that last bit out loud) The whole thing left me nonplussed for the rest of the day. I still cant rationalise it now.
