These are just three stanzas of a long poem I memorized years ago and used to recite in the Napoleon House in New Orleans after a few shots of green chartreuse. In worry and in nightmare Vaguely life leaks away And time will have its fancy Tomorrow or today. It was late late in the evening. The lovers they were gone. The clock had ceased its chiming And the deep river ran on.
