And what about Christmas trees?? Whats the safest for your family? Lets consider the options.... Artificial trees are probably not the best choice. Almost all of them are made of PVC, one of the most toxic plastics. And they are not usually recyclable, so they are bound for an eternity in our landfill someday. Buying a real tree from a local tree farm is a safer choice (buying pre-cut from a store is not the same though). Make sure to call around and find a local farmer that does not use pesticides. Unfortunately, most Christmas trees are highly sprayed. The best part is going there as a family, choosing your live tree and cutting it down yourself, or having them saw it down for you. Most farms have a machine to shake it out and bale it for transport. And many have a bonfire & hot cocoa to round out the experience. (Kelowna locals, I only found one farm without pesticides. I will post info in the comments). You can also get a provincial permit to go out into the woods and cut your own tree. The most eco-friendly thing to do is to find out where they will be clear cutting anyways (like under power lines, etc). Another GREAT option is a LIVING Christmas tree. These are potted trees that you can plant afterwards. I love this idea, but there are a few things to know. They only should be indoors about 7-10 days. It also is helpful to have a garage, as they need to be slowly acclimatized to the warm indoor temps, and then slowly back to cold outdoors. In some cities, there are tree rental companies. I wish we had one! This is so cool. I found one in Vancouver, BC, I will post the link in the comments. They rent and deliver LIVING trees as well as fresh cut trees. Sometimes its fun to go cut your own, but sometimes it would be so great to just have it show up at your door! lol. They also pick it up and dispose of it afterward. Whatever you choose, if you have a live tree, remember to water it at least twice a day. Trees need a few litres of water every single day.
