“And what of bitterness, resentment and hurt?” The older - TopicsExpress

“And what of bitterness, resentment and hurt?” The older student leaned back, rested his head on the rocks of the cliff wall that reached up into the ski. He seemed to be thinking. It was a long time before he turned to me with glassy eyes and answered. “A Jedi cares not for these feelings.” He stared at me, for just long enough, that I wondered if he could see the deeper things. Then he turned back and looked off towards the setting sun. “But forgiving and forgetting is not a one time thing.” He said this softly and gestured with his frail hand at the marmalade globe setting behind the mountains across the canyon.. I followed his gaze and for the first time I could see it... Or feel it. It was like time stood still... or moved so slowly that I could not see it pass. And yet... I could still see the sun... slipping inexorably into the the past as the world raced along on its way. Then he said. “These things are not like mosquitos that disturb your sleep. They are things that remain mostly hidden. They only surface when you run into someone, or see a photograph. Or when the memories come unbidden.” He looked at me again, but now all I felt from his stare was empathy. “And every time this happens, it is a new opportunity to forgive and forget. But you must make this choice every time it arises, from here to eternity... and you wont always make the same choice.” I watched as the distant mountains reached up to block out the last rays of light and warmth. I was a young padawan then, and it was at that moment that I knew. It is a great art of the Jedi, not that they forgive, but that they do so consistently, for hundreds and hundreds of years.
