And whatever work you do, do your best, as you are working unto the Lord and not unto men. Colossians 3:23 You gain self respect by doing more than you should have to do. You gain the respect of others and you are a witness of the good character that is built in you by the Spirit of God. during the rise of Christianity, the Christian slaves were preferred above all others and the ones who bought them actually paid more for them because they had made a reputation for themselves of good work ethic and excellent character, and the pagan world took note that they were Christians. They were a witness to the world without saying a word. If you live your life each day for Jesus and let him shine through you in all that you do, the world will take notice that you are a Christian and they will want what you have.
