And while I am fondly remembering trumpet players, there was this week-long pit gig playing for a traveling ballet company. Mid-week, the conductor jotted a note, during a performance and asked the strings and woodwinds to pass it back through their ranks to the principal trumpet. It said, Nice playing but please, a little softer. The trumpeter (I will call him by his real name, Jim, as he is now deceased and dearly missed), turned the note over and wrote on the back, before having it passed up through the orchestra to the conductor, Thank you. Now, go back to conducting, which you do well, and leave the trumpet playing to me. The conductor asked the contractor to replace him for the next show and the union denied the request.
