Andres Bonifacio is the most tragic and one of the most loved of all Filipino heroes. I believe even a little more than Rizal -- who was primarily chosen as the national hero by the influence and urging of our American colonizers - yup! You didnt know that? The movie touches on the beginnings of Andres. Though not explained in detail, I am glad Bonifacio was not pictured as really poor as some historians would want us to believe. The love story of Oriang and Andres was cute -- as how courtship and love stories evolved during those times. The most controversial and never to be missed episode of how Andres Bonifacio was treated by Aguinaldo and the Magdalo group of the Philippine revolution can not be over emphasized. Their lives and stories are intertwined. In fact after watching this movie, I felt ashamed to be a Cavitena (and boast of belonging to the seat of the Philippine revolution) because of how Aguinaldo failed to do anything about the way Bonifacio was considered a liability more than an asset by his Magdalo goup. In the movie Aguinaldo, it was portrayed that Emilio A. felt he couldnt do anything about it and that his hands were tied, well, he committed a far graver sin of omission: for his absences, where he was needed, and lack of being decisive about things--especially that of the treatment of Andres Bonifacio. This is probably the primary reason, more than his living to his ripe old age, why no matter what Aguinaldo did, and what most historians tried to picture him, he never got the heros accolade most heroes have. People are lukewarm to his image as hero. That was Aguinaldos curse. The movies claim that Andres Bonifacio is the first Philippine president, I believe SHOULD BE GIVEN SERIOUS CONSIDERATION AND MUST BE BROUGHT TO CONGRESS. In the first place, who decided that Aguinaldo was indeed the first president, when in fact, it was Bonifacio who first established the first revolutionary government by leading the Cry of Pugad Lawin - the beginning of the Philippine Revolution? And wasnt Bonifacio construed as the head when the Cavitenos tried to poo-pooed his leadership by submitting to an election to a group composed mainly of Cavitenos??? And what do you think will be the result of such election? Eto lang: NAKAKAHIYA... And you Daniel Tria Tirona are a treacherous snake! I do not care what you pretended to have done for the Philippine revolution. You are a traitor, to Bonifacio, even to Aguinaldo. Your descendants should deny you. Back to the movie, my husband said that the reason why Aguinaldo is the first president and not Bonifacio is, Aguinaldo headed a republic and Bonifacio was just leading a faction. Republic? as declared by whom? -- a faction of revolutionaries which was what Bonifacio had as well! The actors: Ms. Vina Morales, as Oriang, the suffering but very strong wife -- you were good! And to you Mr. Robin Padilla, as Andres Bonifacio, you showed considerable restraint in your portrayal. None of the usual habits that are normally seen from you as acquired by your macho image and action movies -- Very good! You deserve an award. And to my friend, Joel Bilbao, you do not need the billing in the movie poster. The costumes were impeccably well researched and executed. That alone is a testament to how brilliant you are. Heck even the crowd looked like they were cut from the pages of the book Old Philippines. Friends and family do watch this movie. If you allow yourself to watch only one film during the MMFF, CHOSE THIS... btw at Eastwood, the movie was watched by a good number of crowd and most people clapped at the end. Kamag-anak yata ni Auinaldo yung hindi pumalakpak... haha
