Andrew Gold made quite a few fans through his solo recordings and his work with Linda Ronstadt and other talented collaborators. Among his admirers were Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart of 10cc -- the clever, tuneful pop-rock band from the U.K., best-known in the United States for the hit ballad Im Not in Love. In the early 1980s, a Los Angeles record company executive encouraged Graham and Eric to collaborate with Andrew on a few songs that would be added to the U.S. release of their eighth studio album Ten Out of 10, in order to get a more American flavor and jack up stateside sales. According to Graham, We hadnt had any big success since 78, and we wanted to get hot again. When they suggested Andrew Gold, I was over the moon. Id always adored his work, and I reckoned he would be a kindred spirit. It was a fruitful union that resulted in The Power of Love, Weve Heard It All Before and Run Away -- three tracks co-written and co-produced by Andrew for the U.S. edition of the album -- and a proposal. While in the U.K. for the recording sessions that featured him on vocals and various instruments, Andrew had what he termed a blast. Graham and Eric were equally delighted. [T]hey asked me to join the band, which was an extremely exciting offer, Andrew recalled. For various reasons... and after great consideration, I demurred in favor of pursuing my own career and returned to America. But soon thereafter, Andrew and Graham decided to team up as the hit-making duo Wax. Thats a another story -- one that resulted in a lot of tuneful music. As for Ten Out of 10, the U.K. version was released in late 1981, and the American version that included Andrews contributions came out shortly thereafter in 1982. The album spawned a number of singles, including all three of the collaborations with Andrew. It wasnt until 2006 that a deluxe edition of Ten Out of 10 was released that combined all of the tracks from the U.S. and U.K. versions of the album as well as various B-sides -- although it only came out on CD in Japan at the time. This August, the complete deluxe Ten Out of 10 finally received a U.K. CD release, followed by a version issued in the U.S. during the week of September 2, 2014. In honor of that landmark, heres the beautiful song Run Away.
