Andrew Murray (in his book titled Humility) answers the question, how do we die to self? This is your one duty: Place yourself before God in your utter helplessness; consent heartily to the fact of your impotence to slay or make alive yourself; sink down into your own nothingness, in the spirit of meek and patient and trustful surrender to God. Gal. 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ... In his book, A Gospel Primer, Milton Vincent talks about the pain involved in our own crucifixion- I should expect every day to encounter circumstantial evidence of Gods commitment to my dying; and I must seize upon every God-given opportunity to be conformed more fully to Christs death, no matter the pain involved. When my flesh yearns for some prohibited thing, I must die. When called to do something I dont want to do, I must die. When shattered by hardships that I despise, I must die. When wanting to cling to wrongs done against me, I must die. When wishing to keep besetting sins secret, I must die. When wants that are borderline needs are left unmet, I must die. When dreams that are good seem shoved aside, I must die. Lord, when I dwell on all you have done for me- the lengths that you went to- awe and thankfulness fill me. O LORD, you know those sins that come to mind as I read Vincents words- those things that I hold on to, those little corners where I try to hide or hold on to just one or two things that I dont want to give up. Enable me to release them today, through the power of your Holy Spirit- to not let anything come between us- to wholeheartedly trust and obey you, no matter what the cost. To live a life worthy of the gospel, giving glory to you and saying with my whole heart, I surrender all, I yield and submit myself fully to you. In Jesus Name and through the power of his blood, Amen.
