Andrew Neil looks at the arguments over the printing of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad with Muslim comic Shazia Mirza and journalist Nabila Ramdani, and resident commentators Labour Party MP Dianne Abbott and broadcaster Michael Portillo. The journalist Nabila Ramdani, lacks listening skills, which is required for a good argument. Effective listening involves opening your mind to the views of others and attempting to feel empathetic. To be formulating a reply whilst the other person is still talking. However, this means that we are not really listening to all that is being said, and if we are not attentive listeners then our response will be irrelevant and pointless. Here are some barriers to effective listening: 1-You are prejudiced or biased by race, gender, age, religion, and/or past experiences. 2-Having a Closed Mind - we all have ideals and values that we believe to be correct and it can be difficult to listen to the views of others that contradict our own opinions. 3-Identifying rather than empathizing - understanding what you are hearing, but not putting yourself in the shoes of the speaker. 4-Sympathized rather than empathizing - sympathy is not the same as empathy, you sympathize when you feel sorry for the experiences of another, to empathize is to put yourself in the position of the other person. Its so obvious that Journalist Nabila Ramdani is too biased to respond objectively. A journalist should not be biased; otherwise he/she is no different than street people.
