Andy Chartier calls himself a barnyard carpenter. He is also quite a barnyard artist. His many fanciful and hand-built (from recycled materials) chicken coops and sheds provide a home for his sculptures created from wood, wire and cement. With his chainsaw, he transforms tree trunks into wild and domesticated animals, moose, bears, oh yes, the bread and butter bears, pigs and eagles.... along with mythical creatures. Chicken wire is wrapped and crumpled and twisted into an amazing eagle, or a powerful dragon perched high above silhouetted against the sky. His cement sculptures are molded and sculpted into natural shapes. Bordering Rt 4 in Chichester, NH, his creations attract attention. His signs express a gruff and humorous man. “Birds...Bears...Bees Welcome to the Garden” and the “Mooses commandments: Thou shalt Ring Bell...Not take pictures...Not touch carvings...Watch children and pets...Not steel!” He charges 50 cents to tour the compound of small out buildings and workshops and then you are allowed to take photographs.
