Andy Warhol eventually came to a conclusion and said, So what. in regards to his love life and rejection. So what, move on, leave it behind you... Andy was an artist but not a painter, he bridged 50s abstract expressionism into the new paradigm of pop reflection. He was a printer, a mirror, a keeper of time. As a painter, and contemporary abstract expressionist, I cannot take Andys passive road. Psychologically and artistically it does not work for me. I can say, So what., and believe me, I try. But its impossible to ignore personal feelings, true to self expression, you can wear a mask but its always there, a festering wound to the heart and mind. So I wont say So what., and as an abstract expressionist all these horrid thoughts and feelings must rise to the surface, they must visually reflect the same confusion, anxiety, and frustration that they are, turning the chaos inside out. Punishing the memories, crucifying the present thought, and lashing the fears. Vivid color, as vivid as the torture they, and I, caused myself. Its never really So what., you can say it, convince yourself youre living in this apathetic stance, but its a lie. If you have to say it, in regards to whatever caused it, then youre just placing a weak shield in front of your torment. So I wont say it when Im painting, Andy; youll only get raw, brutal, defragmented, psychopathological beautiful.
