Angeline Jolie is directing her second feature, UNBROKEN, the story of Louis Zamperini. An Olympic athlete who joined the army in WWII, Zamperini survived for over 40 days on a raft after his plane went down, and was eventually captured by the Japanese and put in a prisoner of war camp where he endured many atrocities. The film is receiving lukewarm reviews, praising the acting and Jolie’s direction, but criticizing the script for being too conventional. You know what that means: critics expecting more than the film is. The film is an inspirational true story about a man who survived, which is the greatest victory over his tormentors. I’ve wanted to see this film for some time as I find Zamperini’s story to be so inspiring and perfect for an old fashioned Hollywood biopic. I also think that people are criticizing Jolie over picayune things such as casting British Newcomer Jack O’ Connell as an American hero, to the running time (at 137 minutes many believe it should be longer), to the PG-13 rating. Having seen many PG-13 films this year I can attest that filmmakers are pushing the rating, but as long as the story is good, the rating doesn’t matter. I think that Jolie is getting all of the hate because of who she is, not because of the film she has made. Even though I know that Ms. Jolie will probably not read this I will say it anyways: Ms. Jolie I wish you and your film all the best of luck and I look forward to seeing it on the big screen. https://youtube/watch?v=XrjJbl7kRrI
