Anger is very rarely the first emotion. It is a cover up emotion. I have to try and remember this when dealing with people who openly mock Jesus and my belief in him. At times my anger rises up, and I want to handle it like I used to, which I know is not what my Lord wants. I must realize my anger is trying to cover up the fact that I am actually hurt by the things that they say. I must also remember they have most likely been hurt at some point by someone representing God or they believe God has hurt them, so they too are covering these things with anger towards Him. Once I realize this, I can begin to have compassion for them, which is what I believe my Lord wants. By doing this I can allow God to use me to pray for them to be healed rather that hate them for what they say. After all Jesus prayed for the very ones who nailed him to the cross. Forgive them Lord, for they know not what they do. - Jesus
