Anglesey World War II plane tragedy memorial service- A cold blustery day did not keep the crowds from attending. Colonel Travis Willis, Air Attaché to the American Embassy spoke at the ceremony and dedications will also be made by Albert Owen MP and Rhun ap Iorwerth AM to mention only a few. The tragic loss of an aircrew returning to Anglesey from a daring mission over Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II will be commemorated this weekend. The US Eighth Airforce B-24 Bomber the Jigs Up was on its way back from a radar jamming mission when it ran out of fuel in atrocious weather and crashed near North Stack on December 22, 1944. Two propellers were recovered from the Jigs Up; one is placed within the US National Military Museum, Fort Fisher, North Carolina, and the other one is part of a memorial within the Breakwater Country Park. The 70th anniversary of the loss of the eight airmen will be marked with the relocation of a memorial to the brave men who died in the accident on their return to RAF Valley. County Councillor Jeff Evans has been part of the planning for the memorial’s relocation.
