Animal Chat with Eddy Allen on WDOR kicked off with the announcement that the cat census is down to 125! Thats a lower number than has been seen for six months, but we know it can go lower still so the cat adoption special continues. Select a candy cane from over the door to find out the discount off/special gift you receive. There are three dogs available - Max (Mastiff, no kids or other dogs), Bandit (Australian Shepherd/Yorkie), Shane (Australian cattle dog/hound). Both Waldo & Dodger have adoptions pending. Its January 20th, and adoptions continue to exceed the day count - were up to 27 with several more at PetSmart this evening. Awesome start to 2015! Nancy Fisher, DCHS Program Coordinator, took the Chat opportunity to review the Reclaim procedure. This information is straight from the dooranimals website, and wed be happy to discuss with any animal owner who calls us (920-746-1111). The Door County Humane Society provides a safe haven for lost or homeless pets while working to reunite them with their owners or place them with a new loving family. WORKING TO REUNITE THEM WITH THEIR OWNERS is first on the priority list; we are here to protect the animal who has no voice. DCHS is grateful to private citizens who go out of their way to bring in a lost cat or dog. They are selfless in driving many miles to arrive at our door. Augmenting those efforts are the Sturgeon Bay Police, Mark Richards, local constables and town supervisors. Thank you to everyone who sees a way to help and takes action. In 2014, there were 94 dogs and 21 cats reclaimed. For each one, the procedure is the same: If your pet becomes lost, please contact the Door County Humane Society with as much information as possible about the animal. If your pet is found and brought to the shelter, the following fees apply: $20 for the first day and $10 for each day after the first. This charge covers food, bedding, heat, lights, staff time, and brief exam for trauma. In addition, a dog owner must provide proof of current rabies vaccination; in the City of Sturgeon Bay, cat owners must have a current rabies vaccination as well. When an owner comes to reclaim a lost cat or dog, the DCHS animal professionals will talk with them about any medical or behavioral issues observed: for example, we strongly recommend spay/neuter procedure, up-to-date vaccinations, collar & ID tags or micro-chipping. Well point out a limp, a hot spot, problems with eating because poor teeth, etc. This is our last chance to, once again, help the animal who cannot speak up for itself. Thanks for listening and please visit the Humane Society anytime were open: Mon-Wed-Fri-Sat-Sun, 12-4pm.
