Annex Chess Club, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Norway Swiss (8th tournament of 2014) My U 1900 Report on Rd. 1 (Nov. 10) 5 rounds (Nov. 10 – Dec. 8/14 - consecutive Mondays). Time control is Game/90 + 30 sec. increment from move 1. See the photo of the playing hall from prior tournament, below (by me). Registration There are 49 players in three sections: Crown - 18; U 1900 - 16; U 1500 - 15 - pretty well-balanced. You can inquire about joining the tournament at the general ACC e-mail address: info@annexchessclub . You can join a tournament in progress, and are given “byes” (1/2 pt.) for the rounds already missed. Tournament Format The regular ACC Swisses have three sections: Crown (minimum 1800); U 1900 (1800’s have option to play up); U 1500 (1400’s have the option to play up). I am rated 1621. I am in the middle section (16 players): 1400 – 1799 (As I said, ACC allows playing up if within 100 points of the floor of the section above, so most 1800’s elect to play up. But so do most 1400’s play up. So effectively my section is a 400 point rating spread [1400 – 1799]). I am ranked 5th out of 16. Result in My Section After Rd. 1: U 1900 (Officially 1500 to 1899) – 16 players There were 7 boards; all games were decisive. It is expected that the no. of decisive games would be high. In the swiss pairing system, Rd. 1 has the greatest rating disparity between the opponents…..so not unexpectedly, the much higher rated player generally wins. The rating distribution in my section is: 1800’s – 1 (decided not to exercise his option to play up in the Crown Section) 1700’s – 1 1600’s – 5} these two groups (+ 1500’s) mean that the section will be competitive. Many games with relatively equally rated players. 1500’’s – 6} 1400’s – 1 Unrated – 2 Here are the standings: 1 pt. – Heimo C. Haikala (1767 – defeated me in the last tournament); Hooshang Ab-barin (1642); Daniele Pirri (1605 – defeated me in the last tournament); Kevin Gaffney (1599); Ulli Diemer (1542 – defeated me in the last tournament); Marc Ben-Avraham (1529 – defeated me in this Rd. 1); Sergey Malakhovets (unrated); Kamran Amirirad (1410 – Directors’ 1 pt. bye). ½ pt. – Antonios Valkanas (1565 – took a voluntary ½ pt. bye) 0 pts. – Chris Udrea (1883); Vinorth Vigneswaramoorthy (1646); Bob Armstrong (me – 1621); Jack Maguire (1606); Mark Patton (1576); Junior Boy Tigran Ghazarian (1562); Marko Stevelic (unrated). My Round 1 Game Last night, Mon., Nov. 10, in Rd. 1, I (photo by Egis Zeromskis below right) played on board 5 (out of 7 boards). I (Rated 1621) lost to Marc Ben-Avraham (Rated 1529 – see photo below in middle, by me). I deliberately played into a position where Marc could sac his N for three pawns. I wasn’t really sure who it was better for, but I knew it would be exciting and challenging…so I played into it. And sure enough he sacked without hardly thinking. My compensation was not only the extra minor, but I had a potential K-side attack, with a number of his pieces locked out on the Q-side. But despite my best efforts, I could not find any decisive attack, and he defended, and slowly increased his no. of pawns, and I lost. The game will be annotated by me with my own Comprehensive Annotation System (CAS), using Fritz, and posted on Chess5 (chess5) in the next few weeks. My Prior Games Most of my prior games from tournaments earlier this year at Scarborough CC, at Annex CC games, and weekend tournaments, are fully annotated and available on Chess5 already, in the public database. There are a few (too many) losses…. …. but many say I lose interesting games; as well, the annotations are often instructive as to what should have been played.
