Annie was right..... The sun did come up tomorrow. Whew - for lack of better English ! I am surrounded by absolute quet. Just the tick of keys as I type, and the white sound of the ceiling fan. Big has crawled back into bed, with the comforter over his head, and I have taken up his position on the recliner. A strange reversal of rolls on a Saturday morning. Dew is glistening on the tips of the cycad fronds, and the sun is peeping through the autumn leaves on the tree next door. No TV, no radio, no voices, except for the one inside my head reminding me even though I have 54 years, 10 months, and 9 days under the belt, I am not infallible. Its a strange feeling, to think that every composed exterior, could be a front for inner turmoil. I have often read that we shouldnt condemn people for their rash decisions, not their uncharacteristic tongue whip, because they are quite possibly carrying a burden that cannot be shared. So, lets make today a day of kind gestures, goodwill, generosity and friendship. Be nice. Pick up the phone. Meet somebody for tea. Deliver scones, or do someones shopping. A tiny gesture of kindness goes a long way. Now, that I have got all the mush out of my head, lets talk scare tactics. So what were Escom smoking ? I understand that there may have been a problem, and that something needed to be done. But was it absolutely necessary to put the fear of the devil into the nation ? Come on ! No warning. No discussion, and then three power cut sessions in a day...... And then suddenly, on day 2, the problem is irradiated ! By which time, the media has printed load shedding schedules, people have scrambled to get their hands on them, arrangements have been made for future power cuts, and the stores have been bombarded by frantic shoppers to buy the necessary equipment to survive the ordeal. Crap has been spoken about wet coal and grid overloads, and excess usage. What happened to total honesty ? How much of the quick fix had to do with electioneering ? Why even create schedules ? The people who threw the nation into darkness, must have had some idea, before the time that extreme measures had to be taken. I am gullible, but certainly not that gullible to believe that our government who struggles to fix pot holes, and allows nklandla (?) (too busy climbing on my soap box to check the spelling) to sneak through the cracks, can take our electricity supply from deficit value to dont worry folks, everything will be ok in 24 hours !!! Did they manage to dry the coal . Wow. So, why are they not able to dry up some of the rain that is causing havoc and destitution up north ? Please dont believe that I am a cynic, or a stirrer (and I know that mopping up rain damage is impossible), but please dont try and make me believe that the problem has been solved. Perhaps, that was just a warning to prep ourselves for things to come. We probably all own the right equipment now, so when the next power. cut comes, we will be ready. The poor car guard at pnp, was trying desperately to fathom how much money he needed to gather in order to purchase a small gas cylinder. So, the message may have been..... Dont become complacent..... Where there is smoke the is a coal heap waiting to spontaneously combust !!!!
