Annotations to Maggie’s Civil War Journal, December 1864: The Joseph Vaulx and John Lea families are still at the Franklin Road home of Robert Alford. Nearby, the Federals were using the larger Glen Leven and Mt. Alban homes as field hospitals. Mack was Cousin John M. Lea’s foreman. Maggie spent her twentieth birthday in exile from her home. Maggie shows concern for her brother Joe who had retreated Nashville with General Frank Cheatham. It would be two months before the Vaulx family hears from Brother Joe. It was an old letter dated November 19, 1864. Maggie recorded this concerning the letter, “Received a long letter from my dear brother of a very old date, Nov 19th. It was read and reread with much interest O! I am truly blessed in having such a noble brother.” Saturday, Dec. 17th 64. Another sad birthday. I wish I could hear from my dear brother. Cousin John sent Mack out to Lealand who brought a sorry account of things. The home had been pillaged and everything destroyed. Raining all day. I think this is the filthiest place I ever was in and the inmates so unaccommodating! We try to make the best of it, hoping to see brighter days, although the future is veiled by dark hovering clouds! Pictured: (1) Maggie Vaulx (2) Major Joe Vaulx (3) map Books available at Ft.
