Annotations to Maggie’s Civil War Journal, December 1864: This journal excerpt sums it up. For Nashville’s residents, 1864 wasn’t a good year. Why? the Federal occupation continues, the effects of the battle of Nashville are all around, seemingly no end of the war is in sight. Maggie ends the year with a entry concerning prayer. The text can be attributed to Jeremy Taylor, a 17th century Church of England cleric during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. Saturday, December 31st 1864. The last day of this sad year! How many more such will I have to record? Very much surprised to find a heavy snow, but clear and intensely cold. Leslie Nichol and Evy Bradford came to see Hettie this morning. The latter seems very cheerful; not withstanding her home is a wreck! Surely it must be artificial! 1864. There is something in the very act of prayer that for a time stills the violence of passion and elevates and purifies the affections. When affliction presses hard, and the weakness of human nature looks around, in vain for support, how natural is the impulse which throws us on our knees before Him who has laid our chastening upon us! And how secure, how encouraging, is the hope that accompanies our supplication for his pity!
