All roles are open. Non-AEA, no pay. Callbacks will be held Wednesday evening, June 26. Rehearsals will begin the week of July 29. Prepare and memorize a song in English to demonstrate your vocal range and skill. Principal singers must be able to project unamplified over an orchestra. Bring music in your key and your conflict calendar. An accompanist will be provided; unaccompanied auditions and recorded accompaniment are not allowed. Stage Director: Phil Lowery Music Director: Jeff Yaeger Vocal Director: Brian Anderson Male Roles: Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd (disguised as Robin Oakapple, a young farmer), comic baritone: A successful farmer, it seems, in love with Rose Maybud, but morbidly bashful in her presence. He thinks more of himself than he cares to admit. Under pressure, Robin is crafty and a good improviser as he works desperately to game any system to his advantage. Richard Dauntless (Robin’s foster brother – a man-o’-war’s man), tenor: A salty romantic and a spinner of yarns. He’s been at sea for ten years, and speaks like the sailor he is. He reframes every failure as a glorious success, and he ends up believing his own stories. His own heart is his moral compass, and he can justify any act, no matter how selfish, by claiming it was directed from the heart. Sir Despard Murgatroyd, of Ruddigore (a wicked baronet), bass/baritone to low F: Younger brother to Sir Ruthven (Robin Oakapple). Bound by duty (and under threat of a painful death), he presents a villainous face, but he is wracked by guilt of his misdeeds and leads a double life as a secret philanthropist. When opportunity presents itself, he does penance in a dull career and a marriage that may not be happy. Old Adam Goodheart (Robin’s faithful servant), bass to low E flat: Like an old dog, fiercely loyal to his master and to tradition and the established order of privilege and rank. Highly opinionated when it comes to morals, ethics and his master’s behavior, and willing to say so. But duty trumps all, and he suppresses his true feelings in service to his ideals. In love, we are told, with Dame Hannah! Sir Roderic Murgatroyd (a ghost, the 21st baronet), bass/baritone: The charismatic and democratic leader of the pack of ghostly ancestors, who act as judges and executioners all rolled into twenty-one. By night, he is a party animal in the underworld; by day, a strict observer of the letter of the law, but open to persuasive logic. Female Roles: Rose Maybud (a village maiden), soprano: An attractive, prim and proper and well-meaning young lady, born poor, raised in a workhouse, unhappily single, and deeply concerned with propriety and improving her social standing. She takes all of her social cues from a hand-me-down book of etiquette she carries with her at all times and which she consults compulsively, with questionable understanding of its contents. She is attracted to Robin Oakapple, a man of property, but is also pragmatic when it comes to finding a partner of the best social standing. Mad Margaret, mezzo: Driven to distraction by unrequited love for Sir Despard Murgatroyd. She is passionate, if not always comprehensible, and suffers greatly from a lack of impulse control. Dame Hannah (Rose’s aunt), contralto: An older woman, resigned to a single life after having once given her heart to a man who turned out to carry an evil curse. She remains loyal to the memory of who she thought he was. When accosted, we learn she has considerable reserves of strength, and is quite capable of defending herself. Zorah (a professional bridesmaid), comprimaria soprano: Sings with the chorus and has a solo verse in the opening scene. Chorus of officers, ancestors, professional bridesmaids and villagers, all vocal parts, some have speaking lines. If you would like to participate in the production staff or crew, please let us know at 408-986-9090 or by email to [email protected]. Lyric Theatre is an all-volunteer, nonprofit community theater organization. Cast members will be expected to contribute at least 12 hours to the mounting of the production (sets, costumes, publicity, etc.) in addition to rehearsal and performance time.
