Announcing my course for next semester: WRD 422 Hip Hop, Social Media and Social Activism. Well be reading work from leading scholars like Bettina Love, Mark Anthony Neal, Tricia Rose, Bakari Kitwana, and Andreana Clay. We going IN, so please check out the course and enroll! Description: Young people in Ferguson and nationwide have shown that old clichés about Hip Hop’s lack of social consciousness no longer hold. This course examines the ways Hip Hop and social media have been important elements of a new era of activism. We will trace some important elements of Hip Hop history, examine important conversations taking place within African American communities and beyond, and study important contemporary activism and advocacy campaigns. We will also explore phenomena like #BlackTwitter, memes, vines, and other ways African Americans are using and innovating with social media, both within and apart from specific community building efforts. Finally, participants in the course will have the opportunity to create and deliver a community literacy project.
