Annual Conference Moment #5 (Local Pastors) I rejoiced to see those answering the call to serve as licensed local pastors invited on to the stage to be recognized. Among the group was a man I was honored to serve with on an Emmaus Walk as he led prayer chapel activities. I had known him previously in his role in Christian Clown Ministry...I remember that step in Pastoral Ministry for me from 96. Believe it or not I had a suit on - the nurse hero made me where it. And I had a handmade Cross. Kevin and I made the Crosses. He had one on as he watched. I wore the other. I came off the stage and an old man I had never met rose from the congregation and latched onto me saying Praise God. You were the only one on the stage wearing a cross. I usually have mine on, but I left it on the dresser at home. I am proud of you Pastor. I looked up and my eyes caught Kevins in his seat several rows from where I stood in the aisle with this stranger. Kevin heard enough and nodded. I reluctantly took the cross he had made and placed it around the mans neck. He returned to his seat crying and praising God. When I sat down, Kevin rose, took his cross off and placed it around my neck. I started to resist, as this was his memory. And the boy said Makes sense that the way you hold onto the cross is to give it away. Lord I praise you for this batch of servant leaders you have called in second-career ministry, even as I praise you for those who will be commissioned and ordained soon. I also lift up every pastor and layperson in the conference. May we each embrace the Cross, by giving it away.
