Annual Fall Foray at Mingo Wildlife Refuge October 3 – October 6, 2013 The Missouri Mycological Society (MOMS) invites you to a wonderful week-end in south-eastern Missouri. Officially, we go there to hunt and document mushrooms, which is great fun in itself. But anyone will tell you that the true attraction of this event is just being in the woods for a few days with a fun group of people. The cost is very reasonable, the food is excellent bordering on gourmet, and you will certainly find your life enriched by new experiences. Our headquarters for the weekend is Latonka Girl Scout Camp, which lies on one of Lake Wappapello’s small, placid coves, featuring a sandy beach and enclosed by wooded hills. This is where we sleep, dine, and absorb the latest in the field of mycology. We have two renowned speakers coming to tell us the latest on Amanitas and Chanterelles. There will also be mycologists studying and identifying our finds. We will also have a chance to check out mushroom spores on one of the microscopes available. Friday we go out in small groups to places nearby to see what fungi are coming up. Or you can choose to swim, kayak, canoe, hike, and just enjoy the lovely environment. The planned foray will be on Saturday and will take place in Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, just a short drive from Latonka. Mingo, as a remnant of southeastern Missouri’s vast bald cypress and tupelo swamp and a major wetlands area for migratory and nesting birds, is unquestionably among Missouri’s greatest treasures.
