Anonymous please. It would be interesting to read peoples views on Welsh Assembly members proposed inflation busting £10,000 a year pay rise. The Remuneration board is an independent panel that recommended the pay rise, chaired by a man named Sandy Blair. Mr Blair said that if the increase was not implemented the risk was that the Assembly would be “belittled” in comparison with the UK Parliament, the Scottish Parliament and the Northern Ireland Assembly. He said: “The fifth Assembly starting in 2016, will be a mature parliament like those in Westminster, in Scotland, with law-making and tax-setting powers. “With new responsibilities come new expectations on AMs. We are proposing a salary for AMs which reflect the weight of responsibility they carry. “Clearly people in Wales are facing difficult economic circumstances and there is great pressure on public spending. But that is precisely why Wales needs to attract the highest calibre people to be members of the National Assembly. “Wales needs good governance and good government. That requires a strong effective Assembly. For that to be so, individual members must be exceptional in their abilities and remunerated accordingly.” Assembly members, based at Cardiff Bay, are currently paid around £54,000 per year. Isnt that an already very generous wage? Considering Healthcare workers in Wales have just been awarded a 1% pay rise, is a 10.8% pay hike for AMs justifiable? In my opinion, it is a national scandal, such a huge pay hike surely cannot be justified in this day and age. We are continuously being informed by the political elite that have implemented cut after financial cut, that were all in this together. The AMs pay rise follows MPs huge pay rise of 11% that apparently went to public consultation, the AMs pay rise will also go to a public consultation. Im guessing this public consultation was put to a select few, so it would be interesting to hold a consultation here, where many more will get a say.
