Another August weekend has come and gone way too quickly! Today - TopicsExpress

Another August weekend has come and gone way too quickly! Today was wonderful and stunningly awful all in one day. But it is ending so great! I started working with our dog reactive Provincetown hound this morning. The goal of course, would be to get her to not react to other dogs. Or to growl at the family when she doesnt want to be bothered! Phew! But we all had a great tough lesson and Chloe did much better as the lesson went on. The last half of the walk I do not believe she really reacted to any dog. She wanted to though. Teaching her Quiet and Leave It before she makes the mistake is what the owners have to learn to do. Unfortunately it may not make for a restful walk for awhile, but teaching her to do as we wish rather than just correcting her after she makes her mistakes - is so critical. Not letting her get up on the couch, but having her go to her dog bed when she is frustrated is also important. Less chance of her taking her frustration it on her humans. We then moved on to a grouchy Havanese. Good meeting with his two great owners. A great lesson tonight with Lucky, our yellow lab who is lacking on confidence, but dominant and strong willed, and who also has some fairly strong separation anxieties. Today was our third go home lesson and what a difference! It took a lot to get his owners on board with the training. But now they are and the difference in Lucky is just heart warming! Lucky is housebroken but goes in a crate now when the family leaves. This is actually teaching him to relax. He is also learning to sit stay on a rug, until invited out the door. This keeps him away from the door and not bolting out or knocking the children over. Lucky is coming when called!!! Yeah! When he runs out of their yard, they can get him right back! Instead of him shaking and barking - he was lying down and just relaxing. Luckys most difficult command is Down Stay but the difference in his confidence made me feel as if this at times, very difficult job is well worth it! He stands a great chance now of making it!
