Another Badass Report! On this day in 1950, Cpl Lee Phillips of the 1st Marine Division risked his life above and beyond the call of duty in Korea and earned the Medal of Honor. Only 20 years old and serving as a squad leader of Company E, he led the attack against a well-entrenched numerically superior enemy force occupying a hill position. This hill had been unsuccessfully assaulted on 5 separate occasions by units of the Marine Corps. Cpl. Phillips led his men in a bayonet charge up the slope under a deadly hail of fire. Even after being pinned down by a heavy mortar barrage, he chose to continue through the bombarded area and, although only 5 members were left they gained the crest of the hill. Although greatly outnumbered by an large enemy squad, Cpl. Phillips continued exhorting his marines to follow him, stormed forward to completely overwhelm the enemy. With only 3 men now left in his squad, he proceeded to spearhead an assault on the last remaining strongpoint on a rocky and almost inaccessible portion of the hill position. Using 1 hand to climb up the extremely hazardous precipice, he hurled grenades with the other and succeeded in annihilating the pocket of resistance and in holding the position.
