Another Crisis in Rivers; 8 killed in cult clash No fewer than eight persons were feared dead last weekend in a clash between two rival cult groups in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State. The cult groups were suspected to be the outlawed Icelanders and the Greenlanders. It was gathered that the incident occurred last weekend in Asarama community, a riverine area during a burial ceremony. According to an eyewitness, the clash erupted among the cult groups said to be engaged in a battle for supremacy. The source said the rival groups exchanged gunfire, which led to the death of eight persons. Meanwhile, Chairman of Asarama Divisional Council of Chiefs, Ubonile Francis Abadi, and the Chairman of Asarama Community Development Committee, Ndeendeng Atagwung, have urged the state government and the police to beef off security in the community. Also, they called for the establishment of a police station and the deployment of Joint Military Task Force (JTF) to the area. The community leaders also urged parents and guardians, whose children and wards were cultists to call them to order and ensure they denounce cultism. Police sources in Ngo, headquarters of the council also confirmed that apart from the dead several others including non-cult members’ sustained injuries from stray bullets in the cult clash. When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Angela Agabe (DSP), said the police headquarters had not confirmed the incident with the area command in Bori and the divisional headquarters at Ngo.
