Another Fabulous Find in the Trentoniana Special Collection!!! In approx 1881, Mary Ida Phares, a Trentonian, was able to obtain the signed autograph of Charles Guiteau, the convicted assassin of President James A. Garfield, while he was in the district jail in Washington, D.C. Guiteau was later executed by hanging on June 30, 1881 for his crime. On the reverse of the document, Warden John S. Crocker, who was a General in the Civil War, also signed his name. Warden Crocker’s obituary from the New York Times September 15, 1890 reads “…during the Guiteau excitement…he had charge of all the arrangements for the confinement and hanging.” This small gem was discovered during the bibliographic entry of the of our autograph collection into the library catalog! What will that Trenton Free Public Library Historian, Wendy Nardi, and her amazing crew find next?? Stay tuned....
