Another Heywood lad, my cousin, Bill Turner as a boy and a man at 18 years of age. Bill lived with the family at Chamber House Cottage, attended Magdala Street School the Heywood Grammar School, Joined the Royal Air Force in May 1939, after training he joined 114 Squadron, Bomber Command flying from RAF Oulton in Norfolk, billeted at Blickling Hall. His squadron was heavily engaged during the Battle of Britain flying raids against German invasion barges, coastal convoys and airfields. In August 1940 Bills crew took on and defeated an attack by 2 Me110 fighters, Bill shot down one and the other was destroyed by joint action by his flight of 3 Bristol Blenheim light bombers. On 24th October 1940, Bill was on a single aircraft reconnaissance sortie in preparation for a raid on Le Havre, on the return flight they were shot down and killed over the Dogger Bank. Bill was 19 years and 6 months of age. His name is commemorate on the Heywood Cenotaph with my dad, he is also listed on the Battle of Britain Memorial Chapel in Westminster Abbey and on the RAF Memorial at Runnymede.
