Another topic I wanted to bring up. I believe we would do a HUGE service to our breed if we moved out futurities back to 5 years and out Jr horse back to 7 (as an example). There has been multiple studies linking long term soundness to the amount of time a young horse is allowed to mature before being started under saddle. Take GP jumpers. Most Wbs are not started until 5. In their world 10 is still considered young. There are horses close to 20 still competing at top levels. Yet in our breed 10 is looked at as old. How many futurity winners are still competitive and sound 10 years later? Why do we not have incentive classes for aged horses? Why is it WBs who jump over 6 feet stay sound longer than a horse only asked to go around a ring at 3 gaits?
