Another Net Seized as the Thunder Continues to Flee The Crew of the Sam Simon are hard at work hauling a 2nd gill net that was set by the Thunder. It is hard, tedious work in freezing conditions and rough seas but it is imperative that this weapon of mass ecological destruction be removed from the Ocean. Meanwhile the Bob Barker is thousands of miles to the northwest, 1,000 miles south of Madagascar and 1,200 nautical miles southeast of Durban, South Africa. The Thunder does not appear to be going anywhere and is moving at only 2 knots. It is the 17th day of the pursuit and the Bob Barker will certainly break the records set by the ACV Southern Supporter, when they chased the Uruguayan poacher Viarsa 1. That was 21 days from off Heard Island to the Southern Atlantic. Operation Icefish has been a tremendous success. Two monster illegal gill nets confiscated and a poacher chased out of the Southern Ocean. Kudos to Captain Peter Hammerstedt and the crew on the Bob Barker and to Captain Sidharth Chakavarty on the Sam Simon What a wonderful way to end the old year and to begin the new one.
