Another Pathe clip: Berlin Airlift. In 1948, Soviets tried to starve West Berlin into submission. USAF began 24x7 air shipments to bring supplies to the blockaded city. A plane landed every four minutes. Several airplanes crashed. Conservatives in the US objected: the Wall Street Journal complained about cadillac service for the worlds poorhouse. But West Berlin survived. The crisis came to an end with a deal brokered in the newly-formed United Nations, whereby Germany was divided into two countries, East and West, and the Cold War began.
