Another Remember When...Saturday was a day of preparation for Sunday. We cleaned house because we would be bringing someone home for Sunday dinner, a church visitor if there was one, a single person otherwise. After we polished the furniture, we cooked. Everything we could do for Sunday dinner was done on Saturday. We fried the chicken, made the coleslaw, baked a cake. Hygiene was a bit different back then. A Saturday night bath and shampoo was standard. If the well ran dry, we could take a bath in a sink-full of water and shampoo and rinse in about the same amount. Then came slimy green stuff that looked like snot. We put it on our hair and rolled it up in pink rollers, which we left in all night. The last thing we had to do was polish our shoes, leaving them by the back door on a brown paper sack, ready for church. Do we still prepare for Sunday? Really prepare, from our hearts to our hair?
