Another Trip reflection -- Not to upset my Pakistani friends - but an observation in malls/restaurants and across two mosques on Friday prayers - My Beard and Hijab Index (BHI) in Bangladesh was about 20% of that in Pakistan. In my biased opinion, that bodes well for Bangladesh and is actually showing in the level of middle class economic activity. On each and every trip to Pakistan I keep getting overwhelmed by how rapidly My Beard and Hijab Index (BHI) keeps growing every couple of years. I also observe an almost subliminal belief across all but the top 1% that God is punishing Pakistanis as they are not good Muslims. And if they could only become more like Saudis, Allah will also reward them with untold wealth just like He has given Saudis. So he proceeds to convince his wife, sisters, daughters to don the Hijab and to model himself well to his sons he grows a beard. Next, he reflects, if he could stop women from driving cars in Pakistan (ala Saudi) oil and gold will come bursting out from the mountains of Baluchistan. And the belief sustains while the economy crumbles. Sad reflection... but true. What do you think?
