Another amazing Ignaz Friedman recording (arent they all so?) is this February 28, 1933 reading of the Chopin Polonaise in A-Flat Major Op.53 (he recorded another version in 1927), also issued in that amazing Arbiter label Masters of Chopin CD set (arbiterrecords.org/catalog/masters-of-chopin/) mentioned in todays earlier post. It would be severely understating the case to say that Friedman plays with great gusto: dramatic bursts of energy and sweeping runs bring out the nationalistic and emotional content of this famous work. What full-bodied tone and marvellously voiced chords - and that burnished singing line, so beautifully shaped with variations of tone and dynamics... Magic!
