Another article about a woman with breast cancer who is tired of all the pink campaigns this time of year. The article mentions about how people who have cancer get the medical treatments and then 1 to 5 years, maybe even 10 years later their cancer comes back, more aggressively. Their original cancer was found early and treated, but it came back with a vengeance. The label “survivor” may never feel comfortable for someone who may always be in treatment. To be a survivor of cancer or to be cured of cancer doesnt mean probably want you think it means. What it actually means is that you survived 5 years after your initial diagnosis, so you could have your cancer be re-detected 5 and half years after your initial diagnosis and you would still be a survivor. Since early detection is pushed so heavily this increases the likelihood that you will survive for at least 5 years after the diagnosis, hence adding to the stat that people are living longer with cancer or after receiving treatment. So why is it that peoples cancer returns years after treatment? There are a couple reasons really; Reason #1: The treatment causes a secondary cancer growth. If you research chemotherapy and radiation there is supporting medical evidence that people who choose these methods of cancer care will likely develop cancer as a side-effect. Reason #2: Chemotherapy/Radiation destroy your immune system. These two therapies leave people immunocompromised, meaning your immune system is shot. Your immune system is the one system that protects your body from bacteria/viruses, so if it is not working it cant do its job. Also, everybody has cancer cells inside of their bodies, a major difference between someone who develops tumors and someone who does not is if their immune systems are properly managing the cancer. Reason #3: Chemotherapy/Radiation/Surgery does not address the cause of your cancer. Cancer is rarely caused by genetics alone, so lets get rid of that myth right away. Only 5-10% of cancers are truly genetic in nature. So you can go through these treatments and reduce/kill off some of the cancer cells in your body, but if you dont figure out why your body is developing cancer your cancer will always come back. I am sure you heard the stories before of women being at-risk for breast cancer, so they get scared into mutilating their bodies and having their breasts cut off. Sure enough a few years later they still get diagnosed with cancer. So then they go through the chemo/radiation protocol, which may or may not go well, but regardless of their results, these individuals will have cancer detected in them 5-10 years post-treatment. Again, these treatments have nothing to do with the cause of your cancer. Are you overweight/obese? Are you eating crappy foods? Are you deficient in vitamin D? Are you not working out regularly? Are you a smoker/drinker? Are the nerves roots that lead to your body/organs being damaged? Are you toxic? Are you fully aware of all the different chemicals you are exposing yourself to on a daily basis? Is there an underlying chronic infection? Are you being exposed to an unusually high amount of radiation? Is your immune system not functioning correctly? Are your hormones out of whack? So while conventional methods may or may not buy you some time, the best results anyone can have is figured out the cause of the cancer. Get to the cause, fix the cause, get the results.
