Another artist who appreciated Karajan’s support early in her career was Grammy Award-winning soprano Sumi Jo. Part of Karajan’s first meeting with Jo is captured in the following video, where he immediately adopted his mentor-type role, offering technical advice and confidence-boosting feedback on passages from Bach’s B minor mass and the role of Queen of the Night in Mozart’s ‘Die Zauberflote’: bit.ly/1thdJOy Following this meeting, Karajan brought Jo onboard to sing the role of Oscar in the recording of ‘Un ballo in maschera’ to take place in Vienna in early 1989. Jo later recalled: He didn’t want my career to be destroyed by singing ‘on the road’… I’d come to the conclusion that conductors were people who simply ordered you about: ‘Do this. Do that. Do it my way, or else!’ Karajan is the first conductor who’s ever asked me about my life.
