Another artist who appreciated Karajan’s support early in her career was Grammy Award-winning soprano Sumi Jo. Jo later recalled: He didn’t want my career to be destroyed by singing ‘on the road’… I’d come to the conclusion that conductors were people who simply ordered you about: ‘Do this. Do that. Do it my way, or else!’ Karajan is the first conductor who’s ever asked me about my life.
