Another biblical image that informs the walls in life which we have been considering comes from the story of Jonah: the dark belly of the whale. Read the book of Jonah and Jesus words about the sign of Jonah in Luke 11:29-32. Jonah tries everything hes got to avoid it, but we find that it is only after his time of darkness and confusion in the belly of the whale that Jonah could see and know what God was up to. Theologian Soren Kierkegaard put it this way: Life must be lived forward, but it can only be understood backward. There will be times in which we live in the belly of darkness. And God is at work, precisely in those times, even though we cannot see it or perceive it...at all. This is the epitome of living by faith. Our faith in Jesus invites us to live that experience, not numb out or escape it. For as we live there, we find He will bring us through, and then we finally receive a deeper clearer vision of Gods grand work both in us and in His world.
