Another blast of Arctic air with bitterly cold air is in store for the next several days. Temperatures and wind chills are in the single digits posing a threat of hypothermia or frostbite if you go outside. Frostbite, which is caused by freezing, results in a loss of feeling and color in affected areas. It most often affects the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers or toes. Frostbite can permanently damage the body, and severe cases can lead to amputation. Symptoms include white or grayish-yellow skin areas, skin that feels unusually firm or waxy, and numbness. Be sure to dress in layers.
