Another book review from the January/February issue of Public - TopicsExpress

Another book review from the January/February issue of Public Administration Review. According to the reviewer, there have been a lot of studies of gays and lesbian in public administration. But most of the studies have to do with compliance issues, and not with the effect of gay and lesbian workers on the organizations effectiveness. The book starts off assuming that having gay and lesbian police officers is a positive goal. But then it collects data from both the United States and England to support that position. He then concludes that those organizations which adapted to the more diverse workforce became better at community policing and had improved relationships with their constituents. The book goes on to describe issues that came up and provide guidance on how to open up the workforce. All in all, this looks like a useful book for anyone interested in managing law enforcement. However, given my current position, Ill hold of adding it to my wish list at this time.
